Ocean Beach Ibiza 2018.
Client: Ocean Beach Ibiza, Spain.
After working with Ocean Beach for two consecutive years on their inflatable props, this year we were given an even more exciting brief. Ocean Beach pool parties have become world famous with their tongue-in-cheek production that the team now is under pressure of making the coming summer production bigger and better than the last!
The theme for the Opening Party and Pool Parties this year was 'Dreamland'. The production team in Spain created living-wind-up ballerina doll dancers, a pink tank and a 3-headed-dragon among other things for this particular show. Studio Souffle was then commissioned to create a couple of key large scale pieces such as the Jane-in-the-Box, Queen Kong and a Pink Piggasus for the crane shows. We also made illuminated clouds for the dance floor and stage to add to the atmosphere.
The Dreamland parties kicked off with a feeling of nostalgia, a bold display of colour alongside a big injection of fun with the Living Doll show. For this show, we created a Jane-in-a-Box – a contemporary adaption of the traditional Jack-in-a-Box which was designed with a vintage feel in mind. Jane herself was inspired by an image of Lady Gaga that Gem; Ocean Beaches Brand & Event Director adores, but with a modern spin. Trendy, pastel hair colours and space buns keep Jane fun and contemporary. During the show, Jane pops out of the box while silk performers gracefully perform underneath.
Moving on from the dreamy world of the Living Dolls – next up is the stuff random Ibiza nightmares are made of: Queen Kong has kidnapped one of the dancers and is on the run, dominating the the skies of the beach club. Ocean Beach wanted to create an iconic moment with the infamous, giant movie monster, but with their own stamp on it. We worked closely with the team who were very selective of which materials were used, from the candy coloured faux fur to the pink glitter so that the sun would reflect off it to capture her in all her glory. It was an intensely long design process to make sure the client was happy with the look and pose of the final piece. With it being furry, fabulous and pink, we had a challenge to make sure it still looked fierce. Once again, we worked with Arte Volante who created the mechanics within the inflatable to make her arms move and breathe out smoke.
We were also commissioned to create a giant Love Heart candy packet for another show, this time for Hed Kandi, where it was suspended from the crane above the pool with either an acrobat or a pink grand piano (with pianist!) hanging under it! The candy packet had 'real' inflatable candy balloons in it which were released during the show.
Finally, we made a giant dragonfly for one of the other shows. As the other pieces we made this year were heavy on pink, we were excited to play around with a different colour palette with blues, purples, pinks (just a bit), turquoise, yellow and of course iridescent.
